Two Resolutions to be Voted on at the AGM The Call for Proposed Resolutions to be considered by those attending the AGM on Oct 13, 2018, resulted in two proposals, both initiated by WG-USA leadership. The Board approved advancing these Resolutions and they are outlined below. WG-USA RESOLVES: The WG-USA President with the approval of the Board will appoint a member to be a Sustainable Development Goals Coordinator to become a resource for the work of program and advocacy especially as it relates to #4 Education, #5 Gender equality, #10 Reduced Inequalities, #16 Peace & Justice, and #17 Partnerships. This will be an off-board position working under the auspices of the Advocacy Director and is to be available for any committee, working group, or the Board as the SDG Resource Person. Supporting Statement: The Sustainable Development Goals 2030, is a shared agenda for all peoples. WG-USA realizes that as a part of civil society we have a crucial role in translating this global agenda into our education and advocacy activities. Indeed, we have already recognized this as reflected in resolutions and issues objectives. However, to become more intentional and effective in these efforts, having a member specifically focused on 1) better incorporating the SDG Targets into our work; 2) providing the membership with tools for better understanding their individual role in achieving the SDGs; and 3) monitoring U.S. gender inclusion factors as outlined in the WG-USA Resolution 17 passed in October 2017. Plan of Action:
Financial Implication for WG-USA: Possible costs for purchasing pertinent materials, surveys, etc. Proposer(s): Kathleen Laurila, Jody Bergstrom, Advocacy Co-Conveners; Sally Chamberlain, Program Committee Convener Contact person: Kathleen Laurila Phone and email: (612) 868-2003, klaurila@mac.com ________________________________________________________ WG-USA RESOLVES: The WG-USA President with the approval of the Board will appoint a member to be a Resource Person for the WG-USA Women, Peace and Security information and actions as outlined by WG-USA Resolutions and other programs related to women and peace. This will be an off-board position working under the auspices of the Program Director and is to be available for any committee, working group, or the Board as the Peace Issues Resource Person. Supporting Statement: Last month the WG-USA Board voted to retire Resolutions 2011.1.R3 and 2012.1.R5 related to a Women and Peacemaking Working Group, but not the as an issue of our concern. There remains work to do in advocating for policies related to women and peace and having a designated person to provide information and advocacy alerts for any committee, working group, or the Board on issues related to women and peace remains essential for our work especially in these areas 1) protection of refugees and immigrants especially for women and children who are the large majority; 2) sex and labor trafficking as related to refugees and immigrants; 3) access to education by displaced, refugee and immigrant children; 4) women as equal participants in peacemaking bodies; and 5) monitoring of the U.S. Action Plan for Women, Peace and Security. Together with the WG-USA CIR and ECOSOC Coordinator, policies addressed by the United Nations bodies pertaining to these and other gender and peace issues will be monitored and information shared with the membership as appropriate.
